"Prafta" ? Or ? In Germany
« on: Tuesday 13 August 19 15:54 BST (UK) »
The family bible entry for Frederick Wolfean's birthplace looks like "Prafta" or at least that is how it appears. I will scan it and share. I've searched maps and other sources of Germany and it's environs. Does anyone have a clue about this place ? Everything else I have shows Wolfean from Hanover.  ???

Do please post a scan, but in the mean time, is it possible that it's Prussia written with a long 's'?

From what I've been told, the German version of the name is "Wolfien". And there seems to be a lot of them to this day in Germany. I found 1 record on ancestry.com that has Frederick Wolfien and Sophie Rippe as parents but no source was listed, so I'm skeptical. Frederick (the son) immigrated to Galveston in 1854. It looks like he was alone, BUT I found an Anders Wolfean arriving in America (New York if I recall it right) in 1890's. Can't find anything on this chap.

1834. March or May depending on the source. Not sure of his faith. One of his marriages was in the First Presbyterian Church in Galveston. The other marriages were in front of a JP. I've tried contacting the church for a copy of the record but they do not respond. They have a BAD REPUTATION for not being helpful even if you go there in person!

I'd expected a name like Wolfram as there a  few immigration candidates with that name

BTW I believe that there is abt a 5 year range for Fredrick's birth year (although I would not be amazed if it turns out that he'd been born even earlier):
1860 census – 30y - born abt 1830 (or even 1829)
1900 census – 67y – born abt March 1833 (or 1832)
27 May 1905 death certificate – 75Y, 4M, 8D – born abt Jan 1830
1905 grave – born 1835

PS Have you considered that Hannover might not be just the city, but a whole kingdom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Hanover
