Confusing 'Adopted' Statement on Birth Certificate (1928)
« on: Friday 16 August 19 16:42 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I was wondering if you could help me. My family has always been aware that it was likely that my Grandmother was adopted, and we recently managed to retrieve a photo of her birth certificate.

The birth certificate does say she is adopted - but I am confused what the text in the box means. It seems to have been added to the end of the certificate randomly and any guides I have read don't mention the addition of this box if a child is adopted.

Has anyone come across this kind of birth certificate indicating adoption before? I would love to know whether what is written inside it can aid my search in trying to find her family - my mother did a DNA test which indicated she was half Irish but the only family we know about were from the midlands/London exclusively, so it is all a bit of a mystery.

Thanks

Finding it hard to upload the picture so it can be found at this link:

Hi there and welcome to Rootschat.

Not sure which bit you are unsure about,is it just the superintendant registrars name and qualification?

It's this birth.

Hi Carol

Thanks so much for the speedy reply

So the name J.W Calvert is the registrar of the adoption? Apologies to seem silly, but I had no idea what any of it meant except for the word adopted!

I'm assuming the word underneath which looks like 'supptingistrar' means 'superintendent registrar' then?

Thanks again - this clears a lot up for me.

And a warm welcome to Rootschat from me.

You may find this link useful:

- it gives a brief overview of how to look for additional information and records.

The (badly typed!) entry reads:
Adopted.
J.W.Calvert
Suptt:Registrar.
