Need some help with Stevens family maybe Whitechapel
« on: Saturday 17 August 19 08:36 BST (UK) »
Hi all I’ve been going round in circles with this one so thought maybe someone else might see what I’m missing.

I was going over my DNA matches which I do from time to time and there was a new one which now makes 3 I have to a particular branch that I just can’t quite join the dots.

So these matches are from a Henry and Harriet Newmeier née Stevens.  My ancestor was a Charles Stevens son of James and Elizabeth Stevens.  The Stevens family seem to have homes both in Horton Buckinghamshire and London.  James Stevens from Horton was a farmer and left a will which I have a transcription of and it seems some of his children fared better than others.  It seems the London based Stevens ran a soap and candle business and going by the marriages of Charles children he was at least employed there and is listed as a chandler.  He died in 1837 Whitechapel (I think)

When looking I’ve found a tree that says they have Harriet Stevens birth certificate and names her parents as James and Harriet Stevens née Scott.  She was born in Cable St Whitechapel 1871.  I then found the marriage between James and Harriet Scott and James father is listed as Thomas Stevens soap boiler.  So I feel this is where our family connection is but as yet can’t place this particular Thomas Stevens.

So just need some fresh eyes.  It’s possible I’ve missed a Thomas.  I have 4 sons from James senior, William, Charles Thomas and Henry.  And there a few Thomas’ but none of them quite fit as father to James.

Regards
Deb

Hello Deb
Have you ruled out the Thomas Stevens living in Horton with son James ?
Although he listed as an ag. lab. he looks the likely father.

I think I saw that one and did discount but will revisit.  Perhaps I need to re look at James senior see if he had any siblings although I’ve not had any luck looking there before as I haven’t worked out who his parents might be.

In regards to the NEWMEIR/STEVENS couple - when they married 1891 she - Harriet -  didn't give her father's name as James STEVENS, Greengrocer:

MARRIAGE:
On 28th Sep 1891, at Parish of Christ Church, Spitalfields, Middlesex
Henry NEWMEIER 22, Bachelor, Skin Dresser, of Brushfield Street.
           Father Henry NEWMEIER, Skin dresser
Harriet STEVENS 20, Spinster, of Brushfield Street.
           Father Henry STEVENS, Carman
Witness: Albert John BULMER, Jane CONNOR

Interesting to see, therefore - that in the 74 Cable Street household of James STEVENS  Greengrocer, and wife Harriet (nee SCOTT) in 1871 - James' brother is in the house:

Henry STEVENS Carman 29, unm, b Whitechapel.

Also in the house is James' Step-Brother Frederick WILLSON 18, Shop Boy, b St George in the East

 Cheers

I noticed that one too but still couldn’t work out who their parents were ... hence the going around in circles.  There’s also a step brother on that one which suggests perhaps their dad died and mother remarried?
