Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

No answers yet, just a couple of questions:
Was your grandfather born in Australia?  If so, when and where?  If not, do you know when he was born?

If we can narrow the search down to a time frame it will help enormously.

Philip

Are we looking at Lismore, NSW?

If so, the marriage notice, 2nd column. Cecil to Mary O’Brien: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article116730811

A death notice: ARMSTRONG Cecil Roy 26 November 1964 at Newcastle, formerly of Lismore Northern Star Lismore 5 December 1964

The NSWBDM site is down at the present, but you should find marriage and death certs, which will give you information on where they were born etc.

Your grandfather? ARMSTRONG Kenneth Vincent Death notice 17 December 2003 late of Meadowbrook Courier Mail (Brisbane) 20 December 2003

According to Cecil Roy's military records, a letter from his wife has her named as Harriett Vanina Armstrong. Previous to that his next of kin was a cousin, Mrs J E Gilmore.

Here is a direct live link to the WWI AIF service records that giblet refers to.

http://soda.naa.gov.au/record/3035357/1

I am fairly confident that the J E Gilmore of O'Hara St, Marrickville (nominated as his nok) would be James E GILMORE, 39 O'Hara St, Marrickville as per Sands Sydney Directory 1915.    If so, likely he was James Edward GILMORE, labourer of O'Hara St Marrickville on 1913 electoral roll.  His likely wife - Elizabeth Emma GILMORE was also a resident of O'Hara St, Marrickville in the 1913 electoral Roll.   An online tree has Elizabeth Emma's mother as Mary Ann ARMSTRONG 1847-1912 and James SCOTT as her father 1843-1924.

I’m thinking that he may be this chap, based on age and place of birth at enlistment:

11132/1896 ARMSTRONG James C C parents WILLIAM and CATHERINE S BOMBALA

Sibling? 7065/1894 ARMSTRONG William G C parents William and ELIZABETH C S BOMBALA

There is a military listing for a Clarence Roy Armstrong, of Lismore, with father Cecil. So, if Kenneth had a brother of that name, we may have the correct connection.

Looks like Clarence Roy may have been a butcher, in Newcastle, in 1950.
