Help finding Australian inward/outward passenger lists1905-1907?
« on: Sunday 18 August 19 09:05 BST (UK) »
My grandmother was born in Sth Africa in July 1905; her mother, Mary Cecilia (Mollie) O'Sullivan was an Australian actress with the Pollard Opera Company, her father a Canadian boxer known as Tom Dingey (real name: Thomas Day). I have newspaper accounts (Trove) of both her parents (Miss Mollie Dingey) in Western Australia in Feb/March1906 and Boxer Tom Dingey in Brisbane Feb/March 1906, but no clue as to how they got to Australia and no immigration documentation for their infant daughter (my grandmother). Tom went back to Canada shortly after, maybe late 1906 or early 1907 (fact) with Mollie and child to follow; (again no passenger details to confirm) but Tom died in an accident (fully documented and confirmed) in Canada in August 1907. Did Mollie ever go to Canada? Passenger lists are so hard to search and I have exhausted all of the leads I can find. Can anyone help?

Do you know that they actually immigrated?
Both being in the 'entertainment' field, maybe they just came for career reasons?
In which case you might only find them on passenger lists, not immigrant lists.
They could have disembarked in any of a number of Australian ports.

Various articles on Trove describing Tom's fights in South Africa as late as the end of November 1905.

Trove article from The Telegraph in Brisbane dated 30 Jan 1906 says "Tom Dingey, just arrived from Africa" so I think they travelled Dec1905/Jan1906

Trying to find a shipping notice that mentions one of them
Richardson, Sherman, Gillam, Hitchcock, Neighbour, Groom, Walton, Strange, Littleford, Brown, Guy, Abbs, Tasker, Bartlett, Farey, Etteridge

Have you considered that the ships from South Africa may have called into Albany W.A ?

W.A. state records office includes records for 1898-1925 on CD ROM.  : http://www.sro.wa.gov.au/archive-collection/collection/passenger-lists-and-immigration-records

Also, remember that from 1901 immigration became a Commonwealth responsibility under the Federal constitution.... so perhaps the National Archives of Australia's Western Australia Branch has holdings over an above those on the NAA's website :

http://naa.gov.au/collection/search/ then to Record Search and then to Passenger arrivals...

It also depends on whihc name they travelled under Day, Dingey or O'Sullivan.

For example, there is a Mary Dingey and infant from Cape Town on the Victorian unassisted passenger lists in December 1905 aboard the "Persic".
Richardson, Sherman, Gillam, Hitchcock, Neighbour, Groom, Walton, Strange, Littleford, Brown, Guy, Abbs, Tasker, Bartlett, Farey, Etteridge

Mary Dingey and infant sounds like them. How did you find this and where can I see it? Thank you.

I dont know what the Australian Resources Board is. I have done a searches on FamilySearch, NAA and scrolled through hours of lists within the South Australian Passenger lists to no avail. If there is somewhere else to try, please give me a link. Thank you.
