Hosmer
« on: Sunday 18 August 19 17:07 BST (UK) »
My brick wall : An Edward Hosmer  in 1841 census at "Stawe Goose"? Heathfield with wife Elizabeth, son Edward and daughters Betsy and Burgum.
At his second marriage he says his father's name was Thomas, he always gives his place of birth as Mayfield
Birthdates vary from 1803 to 1810.
Any ideas?

in case it's of interest, I have a note of the marriage of John Gallett, son of Henry Gallett of Mayfield, to Ann Hosmer on 05 Nov 1626. John's bur. was 03 sept 1641.

The Sussex Marriage Index has the marriage place as Rotherfield, while the BVRI has Frant. Frant was in Rotherfield Hundred so both may be correct?

Gallet/ts lived in and around Mayfield, I guess Hosmers were well-established around there too? I don't anything else about John or Ann (but I'm keen to know more about them!)

A Richard Hosmer from Mayfield was burnt at the stake in Lewis for being a protestant. Do you have any knowledge of him?

No, I didn't know this! I'm researching the Gallet/t family, and knew only of Ann Hosmer from her marriage. But I will look further - I love being sidetracked, and the way things like this give context to the times and places of my ancestors.

I've found Rootschat to be full of helpful and knowledgable people; I hope you find some replies and enjoy your researching!

Thank you, yes I have this Will, which as you say, in addition to his occupation, helpfully mentions the names of his mother, five sisters (and a sister's spouse) and two brothers. If only all Wills were as helpful!
