I have wondered why on the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses - people were asked to state their religion - after all it was part of the UK at that point and that question was not asked in England, Scotland or Wales.

Interestingly - I see that Irish people could be fined for failing to answer questions -- but NOT fined if they refused to state their religion. Clearly it was recognized as a potentially sensitive subject.
