Help finding John McGuire in any census
« on: Monday 19 August 19 10:47 BST (UK) »
B. 21 Nov 1859 Westmeath, Ireland
D:15 Mar 1940 Bronx, New York, USA

I can't find him in any census, ive searched with and without his job description. I can't find him on findagrave so I don't know what his wife's actual non-nickname first name is.

1925 - there are two children with them:

Joseph, 26 and Margaret, 20.

Joseph's WW1 draft card shows him born NY, April 19 1899.

Hi Gaget thanks for your reply. His death cert said he was a waiter so I was looking for waiters. Also his death cert said his wife's name was Tinie I can't see the original so it might be transcribed but I was trying to think of name's Tinie might be a nickname for.

Do you have any more help from the Irish records? Do you know when he left Ireland, did he have brothers or sisters? Did they come to the US, if so where?

He was born too early for the civil records, but what about his siblings? Were there other children born to this couple after 1865? Can you find them?

His mother's maiden name, according to his death record, is suspicious. I haven't seen it before, which doesn't mean much, but it doesn't show up anywhere in Ireland on Griffith's Valuation according to https://www.johngrenham.com/surnames/. No Gilshaws either. Not a good sign. It might be mistranscribed.

Are you able to get a copy of the actual death record itself? Right now you only have familysearch's transcription of it. Their transcription of census records leaves a lot to be desired.  The record might also tell you the informant who provided the information. If it looks like a son or daughter that will help. Some death records even give the relation.

Have you looked for Maguire or other variant spellings?

I had an aunt Theresa who was called Tiny, but she was also the smallest of the family, so I don't know if it was a nickname based on her given name or her size.

The reason that I thought that the chauffeur might be a possible is that he maybe got a bit too old to drive and became a waiter.

I had a look at immigration records, marriages in Ireland, other Irish records, etc. but couldn't get a sure hit.  US newspapers might have some obit. reports.

1933 New York City Directory
There was no John McGuire or Maguire at 237 East 194 St, Bronx. There was no John McGuire or Maguire who was a waiter.
The closest I found was
John McGuire (Dublin Lunch) resides 564 East 166th
but that doesn't sound like a place that would employ waiters.

There aren't any directories later than that but before 1940 at ancestry.com.
