the amish
« on: Monday 19 August 19 11:03 BST (UK) »
not sure where to post this, so im here today.

its not a family query, so ive not traced backwards.

ive found an amish community in a place i know well in germany  in the early  to mid nineteenth century.

as this is and was a solid catholic area, this was very unusual.

they were not allowed to live within the town walls or to bury their dead in consecrated ground.

they left in the mid nineteenth century, intending to travel to america.

ive contacted the amish there, but they have no record of their arrival, so presumably they remained in  europe.

i have names and one german university tried to trace records in the 1970s without success.

are there any particular tips anyone could give me please ??? ???

Did you mean America = U.S.?
I think there are Amish in South America also, and Canada and Mexico. I'd have to Google harder to be sure.

If you have individual names, have you looked for them on incoming and outgoing passenger lists? Hamburg outgoing passengers list is on line, I think at ancestry. And if they entered the US they should be on an incoming passenger list at one of the ports.

thank you.....on the terminated lease document for the property and fields where they lived it only says america and id assumed it meant the us, so thanks for the tip...ill follow it up.

if they stayed in europe and remained amish and werent allowed to be buried in consecrated ground, i wonder where their burial records might be....in germany, at least, there were only church records, as far as i know, and none of them are listed there.

come to that, if and when any were buried in unconsecrated ground, was that land returned to grazing or farmland when they left......it all conjures up more questions
