Maybe of interest - no Wall's birth for Jane

   WALTERS, JANE       -
GRO Reference: 1844  D Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON AND SEISDON  Volume 17  Page 293

This could be interesting, Walters keeps popping up. I wonder how they are linked. Maybe the Walls had an alias as I have found with my Needle/Smith relatives. I need to find the link.
Much appreciated. Thank you.

Could Mary Ann have been married before either a Wall to Walters or visa versa the reason below or who is registering births - someone not getting it quite right.

my OH's grandmother married 5 times

husband 1 - v young died TB, no children

husband 2 - WW1 soldier death, no children

husband 3 - died TB after 2 years - had daughter MMN 2nd marriage surname

husband 4 - died after 20 yrs - had daughter MMN 3rd marriage surname

husband 5 outlived her by 1 yr.

my husband says his grandma was an intelligent lady so we have wondered if the question to her was what was your previous name NOT what was your maiden name. :D Both daughters registered by her in the same place.

Wall and Walters don’t seem too dissimilar to me, remembering this is The Black Country where even now the accent can be challenging.

You might have to buy one of the Walters certificates and see what it actually says.  Maybe from the local office rather than the GRO?   So you can see the original entry made by the registrar.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. That is very true re the accent. My Nan was from Wolverhampton and despite living in Oxford for many years her accent was really strong, I love it and when I hear it I feel close to her again.
That is a really good idea re the certificate, I didn't know you could order from the local office rather than just the GRO. I will look into it.
I really appreciate your help.
Thank you and best wishes,
Emma :)

Hi,
That is really interesting and could well be the case. Mary Ann Wall married William Devney when she was 18 but in this family I saw a marriage aged 12 (with children being born from the age of 19) which is backed up by our family bible, so perhaps there is a previous marriage. I will look into this possibility.
The more I look into my tree the more I realise records are at the mercy of the recorder and their questions which can send you in all sorts of directions!
Thanks for getting back to me.
