Likely entry for Jane's birth from SP index:

Jane BENTHOPE
1864
644/10 84
Hutchesontown

Also registered under MCCORMICK which would mean father Hugh attended the registrar's office and acknowledged he was the father.

Monica

Added: Sorry, Looby, you had posted Jane as Benthope earlier. The double indexing of McCormick is just additonal confirmation.

There is no sign of Sarah that I can see in Scotland for 1861 before Jane's birth. There is however

John Benthope 27 labourer lodger b. Ireland

He shows as living at 36 Surrey Lane in Hutchsontown. The surname is not at all common in Scotland so wondering if this John could be a relative to Sarah?

As before Sarah's death remains a mystery  ::)

Possible death in Pollokshields for Jane's brother in 1910:

John BENTHOP
39
1910
644/18 336
Pollokshields

This is where his mother Sarah and niece Sarah Carnan were for 1911 weren't they?

Oooo,  just going to bed when this pinged on my phone ;D !
Looks like a great possibility Annie.
How sad Sarah outlived her two children ( I'm sure that death for John will be her son).

Looby :)

That age of 77 would work well for Sarah, Annie.
She's recorded as 67 on the 1911 Census.

Ahh, great Looby as her age in 1891 was 40 & I didn't have her age for 1911

Have to admit it took me a while with all those surnames to consider  ;D

Annie

Add...My Reply #40 was to help with possible areas to consider for John & Jane for years not found on census as 'Glasgow' covers a wide area.

The spellings and switching of surnames has certainly not helped...

That looks a really good possibility for her, Annie  :)

I am hoping if it is correct death entry for her, her parents may be a John Benthope and a Sarah Docherty. These are the names on the 1875 marriage for the John I mentioned from the 1861 census. He looks to have died in 1900 in Larbert, Stirlingshire.

As always hopeful but struggling with Irish records, I thought this might connect to Sarah and her family (if confirmed  ::)) http://censussearchforms.nationalarchives.ie/search/cs/details.jsp?id=41178

There is a link to the image at the bottom. I think this shows a note on the left of the children of John Snr and wife Sarah.  Don't undertand the document really nor the reference to Mrs Harron in Glasgow  ???
