Need help with reading Bap. record, St. Peter's, Drogheda
« on: Thursday 22 August 19 21:43 BST (UK) »
I could use another set of eyes!! I have gone through the record twice and still cannot find James on the April 1795 baptism records.

The transcribed record has both James Callan and Michael Callan's baptism for April 1795.  Parents are Richard Callan and Mary Moonan.  There is another Callan right under Michael's line but the parents are different.

I thought James was born in 1785 - I searched that whole year and did not see him there either.  Thanks in advance for any help.

They are twins or a boy called Michael James
Mich' & Ja'.

It is version of & between the names as it is repeated between the parents names.

sorry I keep adding to this

a tiny l at the top of Mich and a small s at the top of Ja

Just been looking and agree with Sinann.
Both on same line Mich with small l above then y and Ja with s above then Callan
Parents Rich and Mary and it looks like Noonan  rather than Moonan.
Some of these old Irish registers are hard to read..

I read yesterday that in Irish registers sponsers were mostly  relatives  or inlaws and that the sponsers 'wives names were usually given their maiden surname eg  Thos Keogh and Brigida Egan( Brigida being  Thomas's wife).

Thank you all very much.  I can now see the names once you indicated how they were written.  I am still wondering about Mary's maiden name though - doesn't the M in Mary and the M in Moonan look the same?  Or could it be that the person recording the info didn't hear the name as it should have been Noonan.  I have come across many Moonans - Richard and Mary had another child baptized at the same church and again they used Moonan.

Noonan is a fairly common name, I've never heard of Moonan before that said it does appear to be the way he writes his Ms, it the same in Mary and McManus the entry two up, the N in Nicholas just below is quite different.

Thanks again Sinann.  I think I will change it to Noonan and use Moonan as an alternate for now.  I really appreciate everyone's help with this question!
