Lincolnshire place name
« on: Saturday 24 August 19 11:06 BST (UK) »
On the 1851 census in Newcastle upon Tyne, I have a John May born 1800 at Ketter Corbed, Lincolnshire.  Can anyone help me with this place name as I can't find it?  Many thanks.

Is he on 1861 with a birthplace to compare it to?

**1861 has Lincolnshire Caton if I have the right one.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Sorry I meant to add this.  On the 1861 census his place of birth is given as Caton.

I can see 1841 doesn't help either as he is already in Newcastle.

Baptism record for him?

There is a baptism for a John May 20 March 1801 in Kirton in Holland, parents Joseph and Ann.

Kirton sort of fits with Caton in 1861 Census.

Is this from a transcript or do you have an image of the actual page? (If so, how legible is it?)

It's at HO 107 / 2406 / 423 / 2. Can't do a snip as this is a Look Up board and attachments are disabled. It certainly looks like Kettercorbed  :-\

Could be an accent problem with the the way the name was interpreted and written. His age varies on the censuses but his death, presumably in 1871, gives his birth year as 1801.

As suggested by Emeltom, the one in Kirton in 1801 is a possibility. Also in the area are Kirton Holme, Kirton End and Kirton Meeres, but nothing like Corbed
