Who is Kate Green?
« on: Saturday 24 August 19 21:52 BST (UK) »
Kate Green is not a direct ancestor of mine, but she has been bugging me for a long time.  I have been looking at Ancestry to see if the free weekend might throw up a new lead, but no luck.

This is what I have.  It's a complicated family of boatmen and watermen living between Stourport, Worcs, and Birmingham.  They didn't seem to take much notice of civil registration, which doesn't help either.  I have several members of the family living together as man and wife but no marriage to be found, and a good many illegitimate children as well.

1871 census, St. Thomas, Birmingham
Benjamin Preston head
Jane Preston wife  (née Rowley, no marriage found)
Thomas Rowley son (Jane's illegitimate child)
Martha Preston daughter
Kate Green aged 2 niece b.  Birmingham

1881 census, Hartlebury, Worcs.
William Corbett  head
Jane Corbett  wife  (Jane Corbett, formerly Rowley, née Nott)
Edward Rowley  stepson
Kate Green aged 12, granddaughter b. Birmingham

1891 census,  Lower Mitton, Worcs.
Jane Corbett, head
Edward Rowley  son
George Rowley  son
Jane Preston  daughter
Ernest Ball grandson
Kate Green aged 22, granddaughter b. Stourport, Worcs.

That's all the definite information I have.
There are various possible Kate Green births in the Birmingham area at the right sort of time.  The best bet is a Kate Green born in Aston in 1868, mmn Rowley, but I  can't identify a possible Rowley mother.  If she is Jane senior's granddaughter and Jane junior's niece, it seems logical that her mother is one of Jane junior's sisters.  The only possibility is Elizabeth Rowley b. 1842 in Lower Mitton but I can't find a Green-Rowley marriage (possibly they never married).
A Kate Green b. 1868 marries James Smith in Birmingham in 1888, but this can't be her since she is still single in 1891.
So I can't find a marriage, death or census entry after 1891.
Am I missing something really obvious, or is this another unsolveable mystery?
Thanks in advance
Bev

Other Green/Rowley children born in the Birmingham area in that period seem to be children of George Green and Ann Rowley, who married Jun qtr 1854 Birmingham and are in Aston registration district in 1871.

The George and Ann in Aston 1871 (and 1861) are not the right couple.   This Ann's maiden name was Morgan (and looks like they married in 1849).

As to Kate Green - could she be the one who married a John Tuey 12/4/1898 Bristol Street, Birmingham (St. Catherine of Sienna R.Cath.) - she was bc.1869 and died 1924 (he died 1919).

Thank you for your replies.
I'm not sure about the RC marriage as all the other relevant events in the family are C of E.  There are actually more than one Kate Green around, which doesn't help.  But it's worth looking into, thanks.
This family is so complicated.  As I mentioned, Kate is not my ancestor.  I am descended from her grandmother Jane Nott and another of Jane's daughters, Margaret, so it's not high on my list of priorities, but probably I'll end up buying the 1868 birth certificate one day just out of frustration.
Many thanks
Bev

Hi
I may be able to help , though have just noticed another curve!
Jane Nott first married George Rowley 1796- 1856 -  Worc Kidderminster then Corbett.
Margaret  Rowley Jane and Georges daugher They had mulitple children(and sister to Jane Rowley then Preston) married Thomas Ball.
Their son John Edward Ball married Emily Louisa Green and Kate Green was her youngest sister.
her parents died and Kate seems to have been passed around various relatives.
The other curve is on the 1871 census for Jane Corbett aged 65 Margaret Ball ( Rowley) with  her brothers Edward and Richard Rowley   and Liz Ball her daugher. The next door neighbours were registered as Thomas and Elizabeth Hall mother Elizabeth Green also from Astley and Arley kings going to investigage if this is a miss spelling of Ball.....

Hi Toddy
Thank you for your interest.
This family is extremely frustrating and has me tearing my hair out!
You could be on the right track, though Emily Green's parents were both still alive in 1871 and living in Birmingham with  daughters Emily and Laura.  Why would they not have Kate aged 2 with them?
And I can't see a birth for a Kate Green mmn Young.

I have the 1871 census for Jane Corbett and the neighbours are clearly Halls,  and my Thomas Ball was born in Coventry and a baker all his life.

You've given me some good ideas to work on.   :)  Thanks again,

Bev
