Joseph Muldowney
« on: Sunday 25 August 19 06:44 BST (UK) »
Hi I am looking for any information that anyone may have regarding my grandfather Joseph Muldowney aka Jack
He was born 24/7/1908 in Bradford he also stated that he was Irish.  I have traced back to his father being Joseph Muldowney b 1886 also in Bradford.  His mother was Annie Nimmo b. 1907 Bradford
I think the parents of Joseph Muldowney b 1886 were Elizabeth (Effie) Mulddowney b 1854 Yorkshire and James Muldowney b 1844 in Mayo, Ireland

I would like to know of any family history to help trace back the lineage

Also my grandfather was a mystery as all I know he was a seaman and travelled extensively around the world on merchant ships. He also liked to box.  He was allegedly a bit of a drinker.  He married my grandmother in Auckland and had my father in 1948.  He was away often and when my father was 12 his father left for good (approx 1960) I understand he continued to work on merchant ships as my father has his log book.  He died in Christchurch in 1982
If anyone can help me with any info I would be eternally grateful :)

It's too late at night for me to do a big search, but a couple of things:

I think you have the wrong birth year for Annie? As Joseph was born 1908, she has to be a bit older than dob 1907.

Looking at the GRO, the mother's maiden names for Joseph Sr and Joseph Jr are:

MULDOWNEY, JOSEPH        WALKER
GRO Reference: 1886  S Quarter in BRADFORD YORKSHIRE  Volume 09B  Page 106

MULDOWNEY, JOSEPH        NIMMS
GRO Reference: 1908  S Quarter in BRADFORD  Volume 09B  Page 43

There are military records for a Joseph Muldowney, born 1886 in Bradford, but when he enlisted, he was living at 97 Albert St., Edinburgh. His next of kin was Mrs Annie Muldowney, same address.  The form for marriage and children details was not filled in, unfortunately, and probably because he was found medically unfit and they didn't bother with the extra details.

I was wondering where they had gotten to.  The family can be found in the 1911 census on ScotlandsPeople (Inveresk and Musselburgh, Midlothian).

Elizabeth MOUKER/MONKER nee WALKER was a 23 year old widow when she married James MULDOWNEY in Bradford in 1875.  Her father is John WALKER a stonemason, and his father is James MULDOWNEY, a bricklayer's labourer.

Mar qtr 1875 Bradford vol 9b p117.

I was looking at that and wondered if it was a transcription error as I couldn't see a WALKER-MONKER/MOUKER marriage.
