James JONES Transported 1832
« on: Monday 26 August 19 13:10 BST (UK) »
James JONES was transported on board the York in 1832.  He came from Wiltshire. He later married Charlotte Ann ROGERS in 1837 in Launceston.  I'm trying to identify his parents - would his father's name have been given when he married or when he died in 1882 (also in Launceston, Tasmania)?  Thank you.

Tas Archives have all his records online:

Native place is Westbury

Unfortunately he arrived a bit too early for a detailed convict indent, and Tas marriages did not name parents until 1896.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply.  I had found most of that already but it's good to have it confirmed that I was on the right lines.  I think that he was probably a non-conformist in the UK and records are not so easy to find in the Westbury area.  My own grandfather, a David JONES, born there in 1838 has no baptism recorded although his siblings attended a Baptist Sunday School - so a lot of lateral thought is required.  Thanks for your help.  DNA is suggested that there might be a link so I will persevere.

His petition for a pardon which sometimes have some good information can be seen on Findmypast.  At least you know his mother was still alive.

The interesting thing about the petition for pardon is that he appears to have been working at or near Bath at one time.  He gave at least one of his children the name of the petitioner RUSSELL as well.  If his mother was still alive in 1832 but alone at that time that rules out several of the possibilities which others have suggested.  Was the Thomas JAMES a brother or cousin? I've not been able to decide that either.  Thanks for your interest in this.

Yes, Baptists practise Adult Baptism,  and children attending Baptist Sunday Schools would not need to have undergone any religious ceremony to be eligible to attend Baptist Sunday Schools.
