Any particular reason that you are assuming death rather than looking elsewhere? Have you ruled out the potential emigration records or considered census records in other countries?

Regarding Emigration records. I'm not ruling it out. You could well be right. However, no one in previous generations I spoke to knew anything of a James in any other country. I would have expected some sort of contact over the years between Scotland and where ever he emigrated too.

Death seems best bet given above and nobody in the family even knew he existed until I found his birth.
