William Balfour SEATON buried at Lake Erie Ontario
« on: Tuesday 27 August 19 21:57 BST (UK) »
The following message was posted in 'RootsWeb' (when it was running) in 2004. We have been researching Seaton relations and would welcome any input ....... even after such a long time.  We can trace the ancestral line back to the parish of Blair Atholl in Scotland, 1780s

William Balfour SEATON
by Michael Bradshaw

"I am trying to establish a positive Scottish connection for William B. Seaton buried in Lake Erie Ontario, Canada on the 24/10/1930 aged 83 and said to have been born in Edinburgh in January 1847 the son of William [McKelvie?] Seaton and Helen [Nee Mckintosh]. Could SKS help me with a look up the following 1851 census entry: Ref. Edinburgh, Cannongate Book 16 Page 14 Schedule 69 for William Seaton 23 Ellen Seaton 23 William B Seaton 1 Despite the slight difference in the age this looks ...."

Not the census, but when he married 3 May 1871 in Montreal Quebec he was of Brockville Ontario son of William Seaton and "Ellen"
Edited corrected surname.
His wife was Elizabeth Brown (English C of E) daughter of William Brown and Catherine Metcalf.

see also 1871 census Brockville Ontario. Parents listed as William and Ellen.

Have you found his birth registration on Scotland's People.

ADDED on the 1901 census of Canada he states he arrived in Canada 1855.

I finally found the family 1861 Brockville Ontario
William Seaton born Scotland 37 engine fitter  ( col married in the year) 1849
Ellen  wife born Scotland 37
William B 12 born Scotland
Ellen age 3 born Ontario
Alexander age 4 months
Elizabeth Seaton  21 born Scotland no relationship listed

So if Elizabeth is a younger sister of William snr. or a niece will that help.

Otherwise Williams memory is off by 2 years as to when he married. The again there is a large gap between son William age 12 and sister Ellen age 3 so could he have married 1846 ish and the wife died and he married Ellen in 1849.

Many thanks for your response Amondg.  We are hoping to pick up the original sender from 2004 or a relative who might be interested in where their Seaton ancestors came from in Scotland. They will have no trouble getting back to Edinburgh using ScotlandsPeople, but they may find it difficult to make the jump back to Blair Atholl parish without a lot of digging (or our help). It would also be useful to tie up loose ends in Fort Erie.

Here are two links. The first goes to the first male Seaton that we can identify. He married another Seaton and her line goes back a bit further. The second link goes specifically to William McKelvie Seaton and his son William Balfour Seaton.

(Please note that this is a work in progress and the end section is still being rewritten in conjunction with a research colleague in Australia)

Thanks again, Throth

You might want to have the moderator move your post to the one name study board instead
