James McManus
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 02:54 BST (UK) »
I have been trying for many years to find the UK background to my 1788 First Fleeter to Australia Ancestor Marine Private James McManus (1770?-1798) who was married to First Fleeter Convict Jane Poole 1768-1826. My research on both just published by Fellowship of First Fleeters in Sydney and will be on its website in the next couple of months.  Recently it was suggested that James was the son of John McManus b1830 and Esther Battin 1754-1826 who were married in St Paul's Shadwell London on 3 April 1776. I would appreciate any confirmation of this advice and birth date and place for James.

Firstly, welcome to RootsChat  :)

The marriage entry for John McManus and Esther Battin states that both were single when they married 3 April 1776.  The Allegation, dated 21 February 1776, says that John is aged 22, and that Esther is aged 21 and upwards.
