Navan family, Longford
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 09:37 BST (UK) »
My maternal grandmother was , I believe, the great granddaughter of Samuel Navan from Co. Longford. I am trying to find any records of this gentleman’s birth, he died in 1879 at the age of 92 which would put his birth in about 1787. His grave is in st.pauls Newtownforbes, along with several several of his descendants. Any ideas about where I should go looking for more information. On an unrelated topic , I have found several marriage records in this branch of the family where the marriage is by license in a Church of England and Ireland church. What is a marriage by license in a church. Is it for people who were not members of that denomination? Any help is much appreciated.

This search on https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

should find any registered BDM'S for them

Banns would be read in Church for a few week before Marriage took place....a Licence was an alterative where a Fee was paid to avoid this waiting.
