GLASS in Scottish Borders
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 20:10 BST (UK) »
I am researching the surname GLASS and its origins. My own GLASS ancestors lived in North Northumberland from mid 1700s. My grandfather told me that our GLASS ancestors came down to the Borders from Ross and Cromarty. I have found many of the name on the English side of the border in North Northumberland but few on the Scottish side. The surname is more common in Central Scotland and the Highlands although the earliest occurrence is usually quoted as in Bute on west coast.

The fact that it is more common on the English side of the border than the Scottish leads me to think the story of them coming to North Northumberland from further afield rather than gradually drifting southwards over the border may be true. Can anyone confirm this? And was there any historical reason for their migration south from Ross and Cromarty in the 17/18 century?

On   https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  between 1600 and 1706 there are no Glass records in Ross & Cromarty but maybe the name in Scotland derives from Gaelic like below.

GLASSICH, GLASOCH, GLAISSE, GLAISOCH, GLAISACH, GALLICH.

The first baptism for the name in the County.

GLASS   CHRISTIAN   WILLIAM GLASS/JANET MONRO   F   25/04/1706   Dingwall

First marriage.

GLASS   ANN   DAVID JUNIOR   04/11/1716   Urquhart and Logie Wester

I’m not sure if these sites will answer the question on the reason for migration?
