Baptisms for children born at The Queen Charlotte Hospital Chelsea
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 21:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I’m researching the parents of my Grandma, Mary MacMahon, who was sadly left at an orphanage in 1925. I have her birth certificate which states the address of my Great Grandmother a Mary MacMachon nee Kenny, at Princes Gate in 1918. Her husband, my Great Grandfather was a Merchant Navy Seaman John Macmahon (Mcmahon). She was born at Queen Charlotte and I’m trying to find the record of her baptism. I’m assuming she was Roman Catholic as she was left at a RC orphanage, St Joseph’s of Totteridge.

I’m at a brick wall, I can’t find my Great Grand parents marriage certificate, nor can I find any evidence of them which supports them living in Kensington around 1918. I would be so grateful of any information or advice you can give me.

Thanks,

Christina

Have you looked for marriages in just England, or also Scotland and Ireland?

There do not appear to be any siblings for her.

Have you found any records of John in the merchant navy?

She was born at Queen Charlotte and I’m trying to find the record of her baptism. I’m assuming she was Roman Catholic as she was left at a RC orphanage, St Joseph’s of Totteridge.

Queen Charlotte’s was in Marylebone at that date (not Chelsea). Anglican baptisms for children born and baptised at that hospital were generally recorded in the register of St Mark, Marylebone Road. But as you say she was Catholic, that probably won’t help.

In any case, a baptism record won’t give you much background information. You might get more from the patients' register for Queen Charlotte’s (London Metropolitan Archives, H27/CW/B/01/024, not online).

You could check with LMA ...

Thank you for your replies. Chempat - through Southampton archives I was able to find a John Patrick McMahon who was born in Islington (10/11/1883). He was an A.B seaman (her birth certificate states this) and is quite likely to be the one. But I can’t find evidence to link him. There’s two John Patrick McMahons born in London one marries and lives in various London addresses. But as birth dates aren’t recorded on the electoral register I can’t see if I’ve got the right one. I have looked up marriages using my ancestry membership but can’t find a Kenny/Mcmahon.

Bookbox, I will look into the records for baptism being held at St Mark’s, although I believe the parents were RC that’s still a lead to pursue. Thank you. I will also make arrangements to view those records for Queen Charlotte’s.
