Location of place Penllain from 1851 Census (Gwnnws Lower)
« on: Thursday 29 August 19 17:31 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find the location of the 1851 residence of my 3 x GG parents John EVANS & Mary EVANS (nee JONES). It appears to be "Penllain" and is apparently in Gwnnws Lower. I have had a look at an older map and can't see anything obvious but may very well have missed it. Other place names on the same/next census page are: Tyngrayg, Dolchgenog, Troedrhyw, Penybryn, Tyngraig, Tynewydd, Pantfynon, Blaenmilwyn, Tymawr & Abermilwin (though I am not sure if there is a logical route taken in such a rural census?). If anyone with some local knowledge or a keen eye for maps might be able to help please - that would be great. Thank you (and apologies for any spelling errors with the place names - I have done my best to transcribe the census as I see it).

I don't really know! but I wonder if this is it - "Pen-lan" towards the top right hand side.

There's a "Penllain", bottom right hand corner -

(below the G in LOWER GWNNWS)

Thank you both for the replies! I wondered about Penlan myself but it is written on the census as a separate place - I think the Penllain below the "G" may well be the one - it is the only one I have actually seen at all so I will investigate further - I was looking all around the words LOWER GWNNWS but not actually "at" them :) Thanks so much

Well done hanes teulu.

Don't forget you can also see this on "side by side" view to see where it is today. Not actually labelled on this map, but this looks like the same place. (between 953 and 972.5)

Yes, thank you Maddys52 - I have been enjoying comparing the old to the modern maps to see where I might be able to visit on an upcoming trip. Just a note for anyone else that might come across this thread later - Penllain (clearly shown on the map that was linked by hanes teulu) was not marked at all on the map I was actually using, though that map had been very helpful regarding other house names. I have now learned that it pays to look at a few different maps if you can get hold of them. Thanks so much for the additional links both.
