Jessie Louise Thorne

Hi, I've got a bit of a mystery which I hope someone can help shed some light on, Jessie L Thorne married Jack Brooks in Oct qtr 1929, he was in the merchant Navy and was lost when his ship was sunk by a U-Boat in 1941, Jessie then married Frederick Oswald Piller in July qtr 1942. She was then killed herself during an air raid on London in 1944. So far all pretty clear, so my query is why when I found her on the 1939 register her name was Jessie Piller, she was still married and living with Jack Brooks on that register, is it a simple typo or something else I'm missing.

Incidentally Frederick Pillers  1939 registers entry  states him as single, at a different address. Thanks in advance - Richard

If you look at the 1939 entry closely her original married name of Brooks is not written in full but is shown with abreviation marks .. under the second L, meaning it is the same as the person above her which is Jack Brooks. Then when her husband was killed she remarried, informed the government agency of her remarriage and they entered her new surname. This is what happened for the 1939 register. it just isn't as clear in the case of Jessie Louise because her first married name wasn't written out in full.

Oh okay, I can see what your saying, I can see the abbreviation marks now, so they went back and changed the abbreviation marks for PILLER, is that because she remarried during the war years and rationing etc

I didn't realise the 1939 register could be amended as circumstances changed during the war years, many thanks for your help. richard

It wasn't just during the war years the register entries were amended. Everyone had to carry an identity card up until 1952. I still have mine. (My parents looked after it of course when it was required.)
The register was  critical in coordinating the war effort and was used to issue identity cards, organise rationing and was the foundation of the NHS.
