Waingoch (Waungoch?) Row, Beaufort (?) Bedwelty 1891 census
« on: Saturday 31 August 19 12:14 BST (UK) »
Hello,

When George Hawkins got married to Beatrice Shepherd at the parish church at Beaufort on 10 May 1891, he gave his address as 14 Waingoch Row.

I'm trying to find this address in the 1891 census.

I've tried the census street index for Bedwelty via National Archives without much joy.

Can anyone give me a hand?

[I've tried finding George without success - it could be a transcription error, hence wanting to find the actual address in the census]

Hello,

I have ancestors that lived at 40 Waungoch District (not Row), Beaufort.  I have them on the 1891 census RG12/4575 page 23, maybe if you can find that you can work backwards to No.14 to see if your George or Beatrice is there, can't search for it myself as I haven't a current subscription. Sorry.
Hope this helps.

Regards Olwen

Hello Olwen,
Many, many thanks - you are a star !

I found 14 Waungoch Row at RG12/4575/f90/p16.

Of course, the George Hawkins I am seeking was not there ???

cheers
Steve

If you have it, what was his occupation on the marriage cert?
Have you searched under Place of Birth (if I have the right George he is consistent with PoB in 1901/1911)

The Census was taken on 5 April - only 5 weeks before the big day.

His occupation given in the marriage register was "labourer".

He said in 1901 and 1911 censuses that he was born in Wokingham, Berkshire. He is not one of the five George Hawkins registered there between 1860 and 1880.

10 May 1891 (wedding day) was a Sunday, so presumably banns would have been read on 19 & 26 April and 3 May - starting just two weeks after census day (I don't know, would residence have to be given before the banns?)

Surely he's got to be in the area for census day?

He's not a relative on mine. I had a contact because I had some Wokingham Hawkins in my tree, and this has got me intrigued and giving the old grey cells a workout!

I checked FindMyPast for any missing Census records for the area you are interested in - nothing missing.

He is proving elusive - what was his father's name/occupation - if recorded? Had you considered George might be the 2nd given name?

Father was James Hawkins, engine driver (I think?).

I found the marriage register in Monmouthshire Marriages on Findmypast.

According to FreeBMD there are no birth registrations with George as the 2nd name in Wokingham 1860-1880
