Missing 1901 census
« on: Sunday 01 September 19 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all, could anyone shed any light as to why I simply cannot find an ancestor in the 1901 (or 1911 but I know you can't do look-ups for that) census?  I have confirmed and certificated birth (1892)  marriages (1919 and 1935) and death (1976), but am at a loss as to why my great grandmother doesn't appear in the census. Anywhere!  Any advice or guidance gratefully received.

Mis-spelling, not where expected, .

If you revealed the birth name and details, together with the marriage, I'm sure someone will have a go.

Appreciated - I only left the details out as I didn't want to appear presumptuous!

Nelly (Nellie) Lowe, b. Kings Norton, Worcs (Also known as Smethwick, Staffs)  Sep 1892. Mother Annie M Lowe (Dd 1896) Father Joseph Lowe. Nelly married Harry Stapleton in Pontypridd in 1919, but I don't know where she was in '01 and '11.

Her mother was a Rusgrove?
There is an Ellen Lowe, 8, born Smethwick, niece to Rusgroves in 1901

There is a Nellie Lee living here in 1901 - Longbridge Fairview, Rubery, Kings Norton, Worcestershire

Household is George Lee, Ann Lee, Florence Badcock (grand daughter) & Nellie Lee (grand daughter).

I am wondering if Lowe was misheard as Lee.

Nellie's birthplace is given as Kings Norton on the actual image.

Hi have you checked the possibility in 1911, that Ellen/Nellie b c 1892 Kings Norton/Smethwick was adopted by the Rusgrove family she appears to be with in 1901?

Thanks so much all - it would appear that the Rusgroves took her in after the death of her mother.  This really has opened a door - thanks again.
