Smith Family, Nottingham
« on: Monday 02 September 19 08:20 BST (UK) »
Hi, am trying to find further information about the Nottingham Smiths, any info/tips/pointers/suggestions etc would be grateful received and much appreciated.

My grandmother was Marian Mary Smith, born 1904. Her father was Michael Smith and her mother was Ann Tomlinson. Michael Smith's family listed as tinmen and lacemakers , in the Bullwell Green area of Nottingham. May well not be travellers or may be settled ones, but with the surname Smith and occupations of tinmen and lacemakers it's been suggested that they may have been or that there may have been some links there. The family story is that Michael Smith was orphaned at 2 years of age as both his parents died in an influenza epidemic. He was subsequently brought up by his siblings. Been unable, so far, to trace a birth certificate for him. That's all the information that I have. Currently tracing my family history , interested in any information if anyone can help shed any light, so that I can rule things out or check things out as applicable, thanks in advance for any help with this one.

Welcome to rootschat

Do you have the family on the 1911 census.

I am a bit confused as Marian Mary's parents appear to be Walter H Smith (not Charles) & Ann Tomlinson
Marriage March qtr 1904
Smith  Walter Harry
Tomlinson    Anne
Basford    7b   206

Thankyou for all replies , very much appreciated - our family is very disjointed and I have currently only got hearsay to go on, and all the relatives I could ask are no longer with us... maybe the Michael is a different family member from further back , definitely remember my grandmother telling me this story about a family member/ancestor. My memory is a bit sketchy on what I've been told with regards to who and when though. What is best way to access the 1911 census - ancestry UK? Am very new to all this, thanks for any pointers!

You should be able to access the 1911 through the link I gave you but you may need to register on the site.  It is free.

You really need to purchase that marriage certificate to confirm Walters father's name and occupation

In case you don't know the GRO is the best place for buying certificates.  You can get PDF's for some births and deaths but have to have the paper copy for marriages
