James Canavan / Catherine McGroarty

Hi,

I am looking for a marriage between James Canavan (or Cannavan) and Catherine McGroarty possibly in Paisley in Scotland but could also be in County Mayo in Ireland.

Can anyone help?

You haven't given any idea of a date.

Their son Andrew was born in abt 1859 but not found a birth record, so i would guess between 1840 - 1860 but dont have a exact Year. It also shows as Catherine Groves on Andrews Baptism record (which is all I have found). McGroarty comes from Andrews marriage Transcript to Agnes Mooney

Andrew's statutory birth register entry show's mother's maiden name as Groves:

Did Andrew give his mother's maiden name as McGroarty when he married Agnes?

Have you found Andrew and family in the early censuses before he married?

Other children to this couple show as:

Agnes 1862
Helen 1864

All births in Abbey Paisley. These 1860s births should include date and place of parents' marriage on the register enty. Can't easily see a Scottish marriage for parents so far.

Just up the line to Andrew and his parents, James and Catherine, this looks to be them in 1871, wife may have died?:

James Cavanon 36 mason's lab b. Ireland
Margaret Cavanon 17 b. Paisely

Hi Monica,

I have located a Scotland Roman Catholic Parish Marriage which shows his mothers name as Catherine McGroarty. However his Baptism record shows it as Groves so very confusing.

Looks like there are so many variations of the Canavan surname

Just come across Agnes Canavin's birth record thats shows father as James and mother as Catherine Groves but has Illegitimate under her name?

It also doesnt show a marriage date or place.
