Another Urquhart & Logie Wester placename mystery
« on: Tuesday 03 September 19 22:01 BST (UK) »
Hi, am hoping for a solution to this one, too.
My ggggg grandparents had 2 children in the 1760s @ a pace recorded in the Old Parish Register births as Balnabine for their first child, Balnabin for their second.
I can't find anywhere that comes close to either spelling & would appreciate the aid of those placename sleuths who have risen to similar challenges thus far.
Cheers,
Col :)

Good on you Skoosh. I must get into the habit of thinking to check phonetic spellings. Thanks.
Cheers,
Col  :)

Col, I used to work with an old Hielanman who said he was brought up in very reduced circumstances on the Black Isle at Balnabarefeet!  ;D

Skoosh.

My ancestor James Matheson was born in that parish in 1810, very close to the small vilage of Culbokie. His birthplace would have been a croft, down as variously Balnacrach and Balnacarach. Inverness library have brilliant geneologists, they can refer to old 5 inch to the mile maps for croft names
Matheson- Black Isle, Ross and Cromarty
McIntosh- Inverness and Petty in Inverness-shire
Longmuir or Longmoor, Morayshire and Elgin

Dave you’ve answered my prayers  ;D

For years I’ve been looking for a croft called Sunnybrae which was somewhere near Bogbuie near Urquhart. Numerous B M and Ds happened there in the early 1900s. I even went on holiday to the BlackIsle and when my guys were playing golf I drove there and knocked on farm doors but no one had heard of it. I have traced the enumerators path for several census so I know where it was near but I guess it hasn’t existed for a long time. I will try Inverness library. Thanks for the tip.

You can view the Ordnance Survey Six-inch and 25-inch maps free at https://maps.nls.uk/index.html
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you Forfarian, I will have a go at that. Something to take my mind off today’s impending news.
Cheers
