great-grandfather Robert SEYMOUR
« on: Thursday 05 September 19 15:39 BST (UK) »
My name is Susan Nehama.  My great-grandfather Robert Seymour was from the Isle of Man.  He told us to never go back as there had been serious trouble which caused him to get out of town.  His immigration papers are from Hamburg, Germany where it says he was a commission agent.  He was very well educated and did well on Wall Street.  He was an excellent sailor with a 40 ft. yacht he easily would take out for weeks at a time.  The only records that match his birth certificate date wise  point to a Thomas James Lewin  (his father’s name on his death certificate but changed to Seymour) and Jane Kellet. He spoke Manx. He said his father was a ship’s captain and he lost his eye playing mumbly peg with sailors on his ship. He was an excellent sailor. He kept a Manx cat.    I can’t find a Robert Seymour on the Isle of Man, so I am beginning to think the Robert Lewin is him. Does anyone have any information to what happened to the Robert Lewin as there is no death certificate.

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D
I have asked the mods to split this off into a separate thread, as it's nothing to do with a Clucas family.

In the meantime, do you have any dates?
Date of birth?
Date of immigration?

The newspaper, Isle of Man Times, Saturday, October 28, 1899,  has:

Mysterious Affair in Douglas.
Mr Robert Lewin, who is employed in the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company's Douglas office, as a clerk, has been missing since the 19th inst., and all inquiries as to his whereabouts have up to the present been without result, Mr Lewin, who is about. 24 years of age,, is a married man, and lives at Onchan, with his wife and child. On Thursday last week, he left the house to play in Mr Harry Wood's orchestra, at Derby Castle. At the close of the dancing he left the Castle to return home, but since that time has not been heard of. His wife is terribly anxious about his safety; but, despite the most searching inquiries, nothing can be heard. It is believed that Lewin has left the Island, but his exact whereabouts is not known. It is stated that he has incurred many debts in the town to tradespeople.

Is his wife Phoebe Johnson - if so then 1st child was born in Douglas Nov 1897 with a 2nd child in Dec 1899 registered in Foxdale  -  she would appear to be dau of Thomas Johnson living in Foxdale village in 1881 with Phoebe aged 6
