Little Missenden, marriage of John HOBBS and Mary Ann, before 1835
« on: Thursday 05 September 19 21:50 BST (UK) »
Hello

Would someone with access to the Little Missenden PRs be able to see if they can find the above marriage? The bride was from Rickmansworth, Herts, so it's possible the marriage took place there, but I thought it'd be a good idea to eliminate Little Missenden first (not literally, of course – that would be hideous).

Thanks

Martin

Is he the 1841 entry with sons Joseph 5 and Henry 3?

1851 has son John b 1843 and GRO online shows mmn as Malpass

1851 has Mary 12yrs older than John so she may have been previously married

Hi

There doesn't appear to be a marriage for this couple in Little Missenden or Rickmansworth but could it be this one at St Mary the Virgin Harefield.

John Hobbs married Mary Ann Jones, a widow, 20th April 1835. Witnesses William & Mary Ann Hobbs.

At the same church in Harefield a William Jones married Mary Ann Nevells 8th November 1829. Witnesses Sarah Woods & Mary Nevells.

Mary Ann Nevil (same name different spelling) was baptised 27th January 1810 in Rickmansworth, parents Joseph & Elizabeth.

Possible burial for William Jones 17th  February 1833 in Rickmansworth.

I can't find any birth records for John & Mary Ann's children on the GRO to confirm her maiden name, have you found any.??

In later Census he is born earlier.

Odd,isn't it?

I think the Newport Pag. Rebecca died quite young:

GRO Deaths:
HOBBS, REBECCA      2
1851  M Quarter in NEWPORT PAGNEL UNION  Volume 06  Page 301

.....

Was Jesse HOBBS John HOBBS on the 1851?

It could well be – as it happens, the following marriage (in 1829 in Chesham) appeared in my Ancestry hints yesterday morning:

William HOBBS of Lt. Missenden & Mary Ann HARDING

These could be the witnesses to the Harefield wedding, which would tie it to Little Missenden.

I've just noticed that one of the witnesses on Rebecca HOBBS's marriage certificate is an Ann Neville. Could just be a coincidence, but it's interesting that the name crops up again. (Rebecca HOBBS is the daughter of John HOBBS and Mary Ann).

I can't find any birth records for John & Mary Ann's children on the GRO to confirm her maiden name, have you found any.??

No, not yet. Seems a bit odd that apparently none of the children were registered, so I wonder if the surname might have been mistranscribed...

Hi Trish

I think this is a different Rebecca to mine – all the censuses state that mine was born in the Chesham/Amersham area in 1850.

John and Mary Ann Hobbs seem to have had twin sons in 1840. I think!
Philip and Thomas
Philip baptized at Little Missenden, 20 Feb 1840 (Buckinghamshire Baptism Index)
Abode L Missenden. Father John a Labourer

FamilySearch has that date as a birthdate (with no baptism date, so I guess a quirk in their indexing)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N1XZ-GWL

Thomas apparently was baptized three days later. Same details for parents.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N1XZ-GW5

They appear on consecutive pages in the GRO birth index
HOBBS, PHILIP
Mother's Maiden Surname: NEVILLE
GRO Reference: 1840  M Quarter in WYCOMBE  Volume 06  Page 447

HOBBS, THOMAS
Mother's Maiden Surname: NEVILLE
GRO Reference: 1840  M Quarter in THE WYCOMBE UNION  Volume 06  Page 448

Burial of Philip in Little Missenden, 8 March 1841, age 1
Death registered March qtr 1841, Wycombe, vol 6 page 310

Death of Thomas?
HOBBS, THOMAS
Age at Death (in years): 0
GRO Reference: 1840  J Quarter in THE WYCOMBE UNION  Volume 06  Page 304

Well done John, I think you are correct with the twins Thomas & Phillip. John & Mary Ann had all their children baptised in Little Missenden & yet only seem to have registered the twins births, strange, but perhaps they had their reasons.
