James Henry Carlisle BAMLETT -Western Australia
« on: Friday 06 September 19 17:24 BST (UK) »
James Henry Carlisle BAMLETT was born in 1863 at Scorton in Yorkshire, England.  He married Edith Ann  Buckingham in Kelmscott, Western Australia in 1901.  His parents were James Carlisle BAMLETT (1825 – 1865) and Mary Jane Milner (1836 – 1899).
He appears on the 1871 census – RG10/4504/50/10, aged 8, with his stepfather George BINKS, his mother, Mary Jane BINKS and his siblings,
Mary Hayes BAMLETT (age 10)
Ann E BAMLETT (age 9)
Sarah J BAMLETT (age 6 all transcribed as Raonlett on Ancestry).

I can’t find James Henry Carlisle Bamlett on the 1881 census.  George Binks and Mary Jane Binks are in Stretford, Lancashire with their own children, Ida and George Binks.  His siblings can be located in 1881 either in a school or with relatives.

From the Ancestry hints, he appears on the Electoral Rolls in both New Zealand and Australia. Unfortunately, I don’t have a World Wide subscription so I don’t know which years these are for.  I suspect he went to New Zealand first as he died in Australia in 1947.

Can anyone tell me when he emigrated or where he was in 1881?

Many thanks
Chris

Matthew, thank you so much for those excellent newspaper articles. How interesting to find out all about the bike riding. He would only be 23 when he chaired the meeting in Loburn NZ so he must have emigrated when he was a young man.  Thank you again

Thank you for you replies and links to the newspaper articles.  I now know from the newspapers that James Henry Carlisle Bamlett was in New Zealand in March 1886, but I still haven't found any details of his journey there.  James's father was a farmer and the Bamletts were very much a farming family.  It was his uncle who was Adam Carlisle Bamlett, very well known in the Yorkshire area (Thirsk) for the manufacturer of agricultural machinery.  I don't know if he was involved in any way in his uncles business.  That is something I can maybe research.

Thank You Ladyhawk for the information. Interesting that he first went to New Zealand then on to Australia. I can't find him in England in 1881 so, although he would be only 18  he may have already travelled to New Zealand
