Marriage banns but marriage didn't take place
« on: Saturday 07 September 19 18:15 BST (UK) »
Hi, is it possible to find records of marriage banns if the marriage didn't take place in either 1951/52 .
The banns were put in at Moorends chapel near Thorne, Doncaster. The groom did a runner days before the wedding as about to take place. Would like to know the groom's name.

Thank you

They will be in the Parish Records probably with a note beside them to say that the marriage didn't take place. The best way would be to contact the church and ask if someone would look for you. Presumably you know the bride's name and you have a rough idea of dates, so it shouldn't be too hard for them to find them.

There should be paper records of the Banns being read if you cannot find anything online.

Since you are quoting a Chapel you may need to either go to the Archives or get someone locally to lookup the records for you.  There are a lot of closed Chapels which may hinder you if Moorends is closed.

Parts of my family were Wesleyan and there are no online records for the Chapel concerned, I do have the paper BMD records though in the family Bible.

I've come across instances in the marriage banns register at Penistone WRY where the vicar has noted that the marriage didn't take place, and he usually stated the reason.  Sometimes the marriage went ahead a few months later.  Off the top of my head, I can remember he noted things like, father objected, or the age was too young. Not all banns registers survive though.  Sometimes these cases were reported in the papers.

Is this the church you mean? I took them of the National Archives catalogue page but the records are at Doncaster Archives. Unfortunately the banns they hold are too late for you.

Banns are only read if the marriage is to take place in a Church of England church. There will be no banns in a Methodist chapel.
