No expert but these two links should be of use

http://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/Family_research

https://www.cyndislist.com/uk/chi/bmd/ (This is a series of links on the cyndislist site)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

If you're going to be in Jersey the best place is the Jersey Archive, it's open all day (apart from lunch time) Tues, Wed and Thursday. Volunteer helpers are almost always on duty and very helpful staff. Bring photographic ID if you need to view original records although many are available on the in house computers. Have a look at their catalogue, www.jerseyheritage.org use the advanced search and put the name you are interested in finding out about in the person box in the format surname-comma-christian name
