help please with 1857 marriage Ruthin
« on: Sunday 08 September 19 17:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I know that Sylvester Grimes married Elizabeth Davies Jul - Sep 1857 in Ruthin.
Please is there anyone who could tell me which parish it was, or if it took place in the Registry Office?
I'd be grateful for any help,
Thanks,
Kit

Just to add that the bride's name was Elizabeth Jane Davies.  :)

Both signed their names

Sylvester gave his residence as St Helens.
Elizabeth - Llandegla

Further to the birth info I gave in my previous reply, the 1861 Census has Sylvester's mother (Ellen)  staying with them

Elizabeth Jane Davies bp.6/2/1842 Liverpool, dau. of George Davies and Mary Leatherbarrow.

So, the marriage certificate is misleading - with fathers details both left blank it suggests they were illegitimate when they were both clearly born to lawful unions.   However, looked at some of the other marriages that took place in that parish and an awful lot had no fathers details.  A tardy incumbent who forgot to ask the relevant questions I wonder??

I had problems with one of my Jones marriages in Llandegla  10 years before, so you could well be correct, Annette. Still, at least St Helens was entered and Sylvester had an unusual name and wasn't an ag lab so it was possible to find the family  :)
