Joseph Matthews from Polperro, 1826-1884
« on: Tuesday 10 September 19 15:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the parents & siblings of Joseph Matthews born Circa 1825/6 in or around Polperro. Joseph married Jane Elizabeth Barrett 1830-1902, from Polperro in 1853 in Plymouth. He was in the British Navy from the age of about 14 until he retired. I have his family tree & his naval records complete from 1826 but would like to go further back if possible. His children were named Thomas, Elizabeth, Joseph, Jane, Rosa, John, Kate, & Alice. Sometimes this is a clue to their parents names.

Looking forward to any help

What parental info is on the 1853 marriage certificate, (and what names witness) ?

q: Naval records from 1826?? Are your dates right?

Obviously the marriage certificate would be a great help as you would get his father’s name.

There is a published tree showing Joseph’s parents as Thomas Matthews and Mary Ann Trengoffe,

This might be the family in 1841

There's a mention here of a Thomas Matthews/Mary Ann Trengo marriage in 1817: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=261553.0

Had Thomas & Mary Ann as possibilities although they are from Pelynt, but the 1817 marriage scuppers that.

The tree also has the 1817 marriage.

Why does an 1817 marriage scupper a 1825/1826 birth?  ???

Sorry! Senior moment. Could still be them but I need to obtain 1853 marriage cert to be sure. Stoke Damerel was where it was registered.
