Many thanks for the reply. Looking through 5 census' she was pretty consistent as regards her age.
It would have her birth as 1830, and in 1851 she had no children so I assume she was married in 1850 which would favour a December marriage to Benjamin Evans and give her surname as either Evans or Lewis. That's about the best I can guess at , at the moment.
Thanks to all who have replied

Hi,

Had a thought in looking at this from a different angle -

Sarah Evans (daughter) married in 1880 to James Owens  (June Qtr Newcastle in Emlyn Ref11b/23) and appears in census records with her mother Mary Evans.

If you were to obtain the marriage certificate it would show her fathers name.

Hi,

There are a couple of points worrying me and I thought I would put my thoughts down so that if you wish, you can consider them further as we strive to help you get the right answer.

Firstly the census records I have looked at in Llangranog suggest Mary Evans was born around 1820/21 not 1830 -

1851 Age 30;
1861 Mary 40; John 9; Sarah 7; Margaret 2;
1871 Mary 50; Sarah 17; Margaret 12; Daniel T 9;
1881 Mary 61 Sarah (Owens) 27;
1891 Mary 70; James Owens 40; Sarah Owens 38; Margaret E Owens 10.

Secondly the official GRO (General Register Office) website has entries with the mothers maiden name for the children John, Sarah, Margaret and Daniel T as "Davies" Admittedly there are a number of potential entries with an "Evans" surname for John, Sarah and Margaret but there is only one Daniel T Evans in Newcastle in Emlyn (the area that covers Llangranog).

My overriding view is that your Captain Evans married a Mary Davies and that potentially one of the marriages suggested earlier could apply.

I sincerely hope my thoughts can help you resolve this matter.

Alan
