Edwin Bartlett, Sutton under Brailles
« on: Wednesday 11 September 19 19:25 BST (UK) »
Whilst researching a family tree for my brother in law I've hit a bit of a poser. On his mother's side his family come from Sutton under Brailles. The person who's causing me problems is Edwin Bartlett (born 1852 died 1925). Ancestry records (1861 Census) show him living in Sutton with his parents and family, one of whom is a sister Anne (Bn 1856). Subsequent census records sow him still living in Sutton but no record of sister Ann. In 1874 he married Rebecca French and the 1881 census shows his wife as Rebecca.  However the 1891 shows his wife as Ann. Ann doesn't appear on 1871 or 1881 Census as far as I can see.
There are different children listed  for both wives. Bartlett was a very common name in Sutton about this time and I'm wondering what are the odds that there are two Edwin Bartletts, born in the same location around the same time, or if the later relationship between Edwin and Ann is an incestuous one or indeed two different families? I can only find one birth record for an Edwin Bartlett, hence the confusion. If someone can shed any light on this I would be very grateful.

The first three children seem to be Emily, Charles and John - all with Edwin & Ann in 1891.

Emily’s elsewhere as a niece in 1881 when the boys are with Edwin & Rebecca.

Rebekah was born Charlotte Rebekah/Rebecca French (in Souldern, 1854) to parents Charlotte & Ann.

No sign of a sister Ann so, unless an Ann French of the same sort of age can be found, she may just have adopted her mother’s name in later life for some reason.

Edwin Bartlett was my great grandfather, his son Tom being my grandfather.  Like you, I have been puzzled as to his wife's Christian names.  My mother told me that her .grandmother's maiden name was Ann French.  Edwin did have a sister named Ann, but she seems to have died young.  I only discovered the names Rebekah and Charlett (sic) when I began researching the family tree.  If you would like more information regarding Tom Bartlett or other of his siblings, I can tell you what I know.
