James McDonald or James Phillips
« on: Thursday 12 September 19 02:51 BST (UK) »
Hi
Ancestry has James McDonald baptised 5 Sept 1789
Father Alexander McDonald
Mother Mary Phillips
NSW ECR has James Phillips V67/1789V1789 67 1A
Father
Mother Mary
and James McD Phillips V67/1789V1789 67 4
Father
Mother Mary
Would second name Mc D indicate that Alexander McDonald was his father

Mary Phillips was in the first fleet and went to Norfolk Island in 1790 and son James is said to have gone with her.  What happened to James.  Would he have been known as McDonald or Phillips.

Any help would be appreciated

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTC1-661 James Mcdonald, 5 Sept 1789.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTCR-RXP James McDonald 5 Sept 1789.

NSW BDM ... remember the INDEX includes the surname, but the actual entry in the register DOES NOT.   Surnames were not included in NSW BDM birth registrations until the late 1960s ... yes, 1960s ...

James, son of Mary PHILLIPS, Volume 1A, line 67 of 1789
James McD, son of Mary PHILLIPS, Volume 4, line 67, of 1789

James would have been known by whatever surname Mary was using at any particular time.

https://australianroyalty.net.au/individual.php?pid=I65459&ged=purnellmccord.ged   this tree owner has done a deal of research, noting that they have :
Mary had several relationships … including Alexander McDonald (a son James born 1789) and Thomas Spencer (daughter Sarah born 1791) and James Riley (a son John 1793 and a daughter Elizabeth 1794) and with Thomas Stevens (a daughter Mary 1809)
One of the sources cited in that is a biographical dictionary of the First Fleet by Mollie Gillen :

Hi,  it is not at all unusual for there to be at least TWO entries for the ONE baptism in those ECRs at NSW BDM.  One will be a transmitted (either just as a summary or perhaps all the details depending on the efforts of the various clergy at the time) record of the other.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTC1-661 James Mcdonald, 5 Sept 1789.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTCR-RXP James McDonald 5 Sept 1789.
......

The Ancestry entries I have sighted seem to be drawn from the Family Search films ...  ::)  Family search does not require any fees for any subscriptions...

Ancestry has the FHL Film number as 993949 and that matches up to this one...

AND
Ancestry has the FHL film as 388335 and that matches up to this one

Thank You for all the information for Mary Phillips.  I think what happened to her son James will remain a mystery and who the fathers of her children were.
