Births in 1852 'Of The Anglesey Union'
« on: Friday 13 September 19 12:25 BST (UK) »
I have made many attempts over the years to find a birth certificate for an ancestor born in Amlwch in, I believe, the first half of 1852 (I even called in at the registry office in Llangefni many years ago and got them to search but they drew a blank). Although I have found credible entries for his siblings his has always eluded me. I was checking the GRO birth indexes and the most likely looking entry gives the registration district as 'Of The Anglesey Union', whereas I was expecting 'Anglesey'.
I understand that this means this person was born in the workhouse, but while I am familiar with the workhouse near Llanerchymedd I understand it was not built until the late 1860s.

Does anyone know where such a birth in 1852 would have taken place?

Thanks.

When Registration Districts came into being (in 1837) they were based on the existing Poor Law Unions.

Many Reg. Districts continued to call themselves ". . . Union" for some years afterwards.

It's nothing to do with a workhouse - or not directly, anyway.

Births, Marriages and Deaths on the island of Anglesey could be in either Anglesey, Bangor, Caernarvon or Holyhead Registration Districts.

The civil parish of Amlwch was in the Registration District of Anglesey from 1837 until 1937.
See https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/anglesey.html for a full list of parishes in the district.

Thank you for helping me to avoid a wild goose chase. That was really helpful.

As you say, there was no workhouse building until 1868:

I assume the Union must have worked on on the basis of out relief.  I've looked at various archives but nothing is showing .  Have you checked for a baptism? That might show something.

Note that at the bottom of my previous link, there is a note saying that Anglesey Archives have the records for Out-Relief for 1848-1919.

Yes I have found the baptism - he was actually baptised at the age of 2 on the same day as his brother, who had just been born. It seems that my ancestors didn't get out much  :)
Unfortunately the baptism entry didn't tell me anything new.
My objective in getting the correct birth certificate is to establish his mother's maiden name. There were several siblings and I have tried searching for all of them and finding a common mother's maiden name but there is not one which occurs with all of them. I am left with the conclusion that either some of their births were not registered or some were not registered with the correct mother's maiden name (possibly some stated the mother's married name as her maiden name). The problem as ever on the Anglesey side of my family tree is the huge number of families in the area with the same surnames.

Given that he was born some 15 years after civil registration came in I don't know how likely it is that his parents simply did not register his birth.

I sympathise as I have Jones, Hughes and Roberts. I've managed to get most of them but the one that is still being elusive is a John Roberts, born circa 1793 in Montgomeryshire. I've searched for a baptism everywhere that would fit census info -  even tried some late patronymics.
