O'Brien Family help
« on: Saturday 14 September 19 19:48 BST (UK) »
Happy Saturday to all,

I know this maybe a long shot, but I'm trying to trace my family name back to Ireland. However as many may know records in Ireland around the early 1800's are few and far between!

I'm looking for anything on my 3rd great grandfather John O'Brien and his wife who is my 3rd great grandmother Ann O'Brien (maiden name of Corcoran). I believe they might have moved to Liverpool England around 1860 and around 1865 had a son there also called John O'Brien (who is my 2nd great grandfather). John Jnr eventually moved to Scotland around 1880 and lived with an Aunt and Uncle in Baillieston outside Glasgow.

I had found the attached England census that maybe John and Ann, but unsure if that is actually them!

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam364 it is going to be difficult with a name of O Brien. I notice on the census you posted John O Brien was born in Co Waterford and Ann Corcoran born in Tipperary.
No Civil registration in Ireland until 1864 I suggest do a search in Church Records for a Marriage for them but search under Ann Corcoran www.irishgenealogy.ie do not enter any diocese as you do not know that is I presume they married in Ireland before moving to UK. On checking irish genealogy it wont help as it doesnt cover Waterford & Tipperary.
Can you check the Aunt & Uncle in Scotland they must have been connected to either the mother or father of John Junior

Thanks ballydw for the advice! I will maybe have to try another angle as you mention the Auntie and Uncle in Scotland.

Have you tried tracing the family in 1860 census onwards?

Not sure I understand the advice given in reply #1 but if they were Catholic there are lots of parish registers here (free)- https://registers.nli.ie/ Coverage varies but will give you a place to search for the marriage.
Have you found any children born in Ireland? Although civil registration of births didn't start until 1864 you might find more children in census records. If you find a child born in Ireland in census records be sure to follow them up in all possible census records in case a more exact place of birth than 'Ireland' is given.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

The first census entry in Walton Le Dale -- they are still there in the 1881 census and son John is aged 15.  Says the parents were born in Co. Clare, Ireland.

If the one above is the right John, here he is in 1871

This is from a transcription so the original may be slightly different e.g. John and Margaret’s surname and the relative is presumably Corcoran.maybe Margaret is the Corcoran.

Old Monkland

John Marter 25 yrs b Ireland
Margaret Marter   25 yrs b Ireland
John Obrien 6 yrs b London
Timothy Corcovan 31 yrs b Ireland
