Matthew Gibson - 1871/1881 Census
« on: Saturday 14 September 19 20:33 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information regarding the national census during the life of Matthew Gibson.

He was born in 1852, Wigan and married Emma Moore (b. 1852). They married in 1869, Wigan and to date I have found 5 children (although I expect there to be more!);

James b.1874
Thomas b.1875
Charles b.1879
Mary b.1879
William b.1887

Matthew died in 1887 so I suspect William was the last.

I'm looking for information on the 1871 and 1881 census, and any prior to that which may be of use if anyone can help me please?

In 1871 he may be on Vessels in Aberdeenshire as an Apprentice. 19 years old and shown as born Lancashire -- so that fits.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Interesting!

I would like to find out who his parents were but I believe, from the information that i have given, this isn't possible via census'

In 1881 he and Emma are living with her widowed father -- James Moore in Ashton in Makerfield with children ;

James I (or J) 7

Matthew now a Coal Miner.

You should be able to find his birth on FreeBMD -- or on the free GRO Indexes -- there may be a baptism on the free site Lan-opc.og.uk.

You could also look at census records on Family Search -- the transcribed records for 1861 should show him with his family (providing he is living with them of course).

Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

I've had a look around FamilySearch and FreeBMD. From the latter there is a possibility that Emma lived until she was 80 (died Q4 1930, Wigan) - unless she re-married.

Looking at 1861 -- his mother seems to be widowed - named Catherine and born Ireland. Hence he may be RC in which case you may not find a baptism. Just look at this census on Family search to see what you make of it. Matthew was shown as born Parr (a district near Wigan).

There are siblings which give other options for finding births and a mother's maiden name.

I am closing down now - but will see tomorrow, if the birth has or hasn't been found.

It's very difficult to judge as I have no other information about him, only that he married Emma Moore. I would upload a imagine of what I have on the family thus far, but i don't know how to insert a image from computer onto here.

Hi Paul -- to be honest I am not sure if it's the correct Matthew in 1861 -- age a bit out.

However I have looked at the births registrations for him and the siblings shown on that census;

Mary Ann aged 15 b Windle
Matthew aged 7 born Parr
Michael aged 3 born Parr
John aged 1 born Parr

In 1851 there is a widowed Catherine Gibson with Mary Ann (but as I say I am not sure now if it's the correct family.)

For Matthew, Michael and John - all born Parr, in Prescot Reg Dist - mother's maiden name is Quillan.

What is the father's name on Matthew's marriage certificate please?
