Stirling Maternity Home, 1958
« on: Sunday 15 September 19 19:56 BST (UK) »
I have just received a birth certificate for July 1958 where the place of birth simply states "Maternity Home, Stirling".

Would this have been Airthrey castle or somewhere else?

It could also be the Maternity Unit at the Lennox Castle Hospital in Stirling.

The Hospital was also a mental health hospital.

Monica - Many thanks for the link - a very interesting site.

For the purpose of birth certificates I would have thought the birth place would have been more specific! "Maternity Home, Stirling" is a little vague.

I think I can make out the fathers address as Killin so they were a long way from either place.

Just checked my own birth cert and I was born at the Maternity Home, Stirling in 1953. I always understood it was part of Stirling Royal Infirmary.

Lennox. Castle Hospital was NOT in Stirling. It was in Lennoxtown, about 4 miles west of Kilsyth. In 1958 it was a hospital for the mentally ill.

You are right on location, sorry about that!

Whilst it was known mainly as a mental health hospital, It did however open a maternity unit in 1941 in one of the blocks on the grounds.

Would the maternity unit have served the local population? Don’t imagine there would have been enough in-patients requiring maternity services!!

I am aware from reading the links already posted that there was a massive shortage of maternity services in the area.

My husband was born in Airthrey Castle, and his birth certificate simply says Maternity Home, Stirling.
