Missing marriage registration
« on: Monday 16 September 19 08:49 BST (UK) »
According to transcription on Familysearch, Rowland Cuffe McCabe married Elsie Maud Laws in 1928 (only year given) at St Aldhelms, Branksome. But I cannot find any record at all of this marriage in the GRO index. I had suspected it was actually a transcription of Banns for a marriage for some reason never took place. But the names of the fathers of the bride and groom are on the transcription, which would not be the case on a Banns record. Although Rowland's father's name seems a bit odd - I have his father as Archer Rowland McCabe and Hugo as Rowland's brother.
Can anyone find the record in GRO index please

Thank you, I have Rowland's "second" marriage to Mary Yerrill 4 years later and details of the children from that marriage. It was the earlier one - if it ever took place - I was interested in.

I don't think they married.  In 1930, he's on the Poole Electoral Register:

144 Bournmouth Road
Archie McCabe
May
Llewellin
Archer Hugo
Roland Cuffe

I did see this marriage and wondered if it was the Elsie I was looking for. I can't find anything further for Walter and Elsie. I can find a Walter C Pitcher in 1939 in Poole but with a different wife (Edith). This matches with a marriage in Wimborne district between Walter C Pitcher and Edith C Flippant in 1925.
There is also an unmarried Elsie in 1939  with illeg daughter whose birth date is in 1928.
I have DNA match with descendant of  Rowland's marriage to Mary Yerrill, and yesterday a stronger match to someone who is also descended from Rowland but not from the Yerrill marriage.

His father Archer McCabe did not marry May Cuffe until first quarter 1911 in the Isle of Wight.

Lewellin Cuffe was registered June q 1906 no mothers maiden name
Archer Hugo Cuff was registered September q 1907 no mothers maiden name
(registered twice Archer Hugo McCabe with no mothers maiden name)
Rowland McCabe Cuffe McCabe was registered 1908 mothers maiden name Cuffe.

You could look for an annulment re Elsie Maud Laws 1928

Could a marriage be annulled so quickly, i.e before the vicar sent up the marriage records in his church up to the GRO?

The FamilySearch record is from MF 2427650, Parish registers for St. Aldhelms' Church, Branksome
Contains baptisms and marriages.

You are right, names of fathers would not be on banns. Could it be one of those entries we sometimes see in marriage registers that are crossed through, i.e. the couple were going to marry, the details were already written up, but in the end it didn't actually take place?
