O'Molloy of Broughal: Dorryn-nyn-tane
« on: Tuesday 17 September 19 03:40 BST (UK) »
I have come across an interesting name: Dorryn-nyn-tane.

Dorryn's mother's father was Chief Caher of O'Connor Faly.

I know "nyn" means "daughter of."  I am wondering what "tane" means.  Could it mean "tanist?"

I have seen it in the names of a few other women.  It is definitely not a surname or first name.  In this particular case, I know the woman's father was named Shane O'Molloy and that he was the son of a former chief, Hugh Oge O'Molloy who was killed by his own kin in 1508.  Actually, Shane was killed too in 1536, along with his brother Brian.  One of the main men who killed them was the son of another man who had been chief.

I could say more about various O'Molloys killing each other, in ways that tie to this, at least tangentially, but I don't want to confuse the issue too much.  I am just concerned with what "tane" means in this case.

Brian had a daughter named Grany who married James Bermingham.  Their son Edmund later inherited the castle of Broughal.
