Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

The first stage is to work backwards from what is known.  Any definite information you have will be useful.

Was HOLLAND Rose's maiden name or married name?  Do you know roughly when and where she or her siblings were born?  If not, do you know when or where your grandfather/mother was born?

If we can track a birth registration we can help you find out the mother's maiden name, track back to a marriage to find parents' full names, then look on censuses (up to 1911) and other sources for details of the family.

I recommend using free sites to begin with (such as FreeBMD, FamilySearch and others) rather than rushing into buying subscriptions for paysites (this can be done when you have found all you can from freesites) and asking questions on Rootschat - the expertise of many Rootschatters is outstanding, and we are friendly and helpful!

All the best
Philip
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

Welcome Clare first of all you have given their description as bargees this I a common mistake as in these where people who often worked the bigger boats on the rivers often refered  to as thames barges.river bargemen  or lightermen . if your People worked on the Canals they hated to be called   bargee's they where mostly known  as canal boatmen or waterway men there are 2 x different sections on here that explain &  might help you decide where to start looking

:) Thank you very, very much. Both.
Will deff find out if canal, or larger boats.
I will grill my 80yr old mom and 84 yr old aunt.
My 65 year old aunt was very close to Larl ( her great aunt, my great, great aunt)  she will have memories too. Everyone remembers Larl/ Ellen/Lolly had a tattoo!! of an anchor on her arm! ( Pretty impressive, and before they became mainstream  ;D )
I know the family settled on land in Birmingham, then moved to Stoke.
Kindest regards,
Clare
