Query on place shown in Hope Parish registers
« on: Wednesday 18 September 19 15:57 BST (UK) »
I have been researching my Bond ancestors who were baptising children in Hope in the 1780s. Benjamin and Hannah Bond had several children who were baptised there. The curate at the time was very helpful in the additional information written in the registers. It says that Benjamin Bond was an Innkeeper of Cumney/Cumney/Cumnie/Curney. I cannot work out where that would have been. Does anyone have a suggestion for the location of this place please? I did wonder about Cymau as that is the closest I can get. It could be the curate was English and unfamiliar with the Welsh names.

I also wondered re Cymau - On old maps it is shown at Cymmau which is nearer the spelling on the baptisms  :-[ https://maps.nls.uk/view/102342381#zoom=4&lat=2967&lon=6775&layers=BT

Added - To me the place name looks like Cumme?

You will see here that Cymau was a Township within the Parish of Hope.

Thank you for your thoughts. I am baffled by the name place as written in the PRs. I suspect that they were written up by an English curate with no knowledge of Welsh.

It will be, in all probability, Cymau. Even today it is, sometimes, known as The Cummey (for want of a better spelling to match the pronunciation). It's a dialectical thing - e.g. Ponkey for Ponciau.
