Agree that you need to buy a certificate or two, Alfred's marriage and birth would help.

1. Is it possible she had another maiden name i.e. a half sister or taken in by the Howards

2. The births were in Scotland or Ireland

3 What was Alfred's father as if he was a serviceman the births could be abroad.

Too many family stories are faction you must start at the beginning like others have said - Alfred and Winifred's marriage cert.

Winifred L M Howes
Registration Date:   Oct qtr1936

Reg vdistrict:   Staines
County:   Middlesex
Spouse:   Alfred Jones
Volume Number:   3a
Page Number:   67

This is the marriage.

You really should get this certificate to verify father as Charles Jones, together with his occupation.

Family sources are not really reliable as names get changed (he was always Bert to us, but his real name was Frederick etc etc).

added - what Ray is meaning is what I said above.  Family members get things wrong and confused and aren't always reliable.  No insult intended, everyone always remembers things differently.
I think I will have to get the cert and then go from there :)]

marriage reg Winifred L M Howes dec qtr 1936 Staines vol 3a pg 67 to Alfred Jones would confirm name & occupation of Alfred's father.

birth reg Alfred Jones sept qtr 1914 Milton vol 2a pg 2029 mmn Brown
Sept qtr fits the August birth date given on his baptism, son of Charles & Ellen. The birth cert should show any other surname for Ellen in case she was married previously. It may show Jones, formerly Brown or Jones, formerly Brown, late another surname under which she should have married Charles Jones.
