Gwenllian Powell Penvay Llywel Breconshire died 1802
« on: Thursday 19 September 19 05:08 BST (UK) »
Hi!
The Library of Wales has an on-line will of Gwenllian Powell died 1802.
Can anyone enlighten me regarding the whereabouts of Penvay Lywell, also any information regarding Gwenllian's son John and wife Maultt living with Gwenllian Powell, granddaughter of the deceased in 1802.  She had another granddaughter Anne, wife of David Williams shopkeeper, Devynnock ... I am trying to trace Anne's parents as well as birthplace and date... I have failed to find data on any event involving John or Maultt Powell on FamilySearch, FindMyPast, and FreeReg 1802
Thanks once again!

Llywel is a small village located on the A40 about 4 miles west of Sennybridge in Powys, Wales. From Genuki Llywel, Penfay appears to have been a settlement near Trecastle.

Hello ciderdrinker

Thanks for your replies!
To Brentor boy: I'll look up Genuki!

To Ciderdrinker:
The reference to Gwenlian Powel's baptism seems plausible.
I tried to find the baptism of Gwenlian Powel 1777 on FindMyPast, Ancestry, and Familysearch but came up with nothing
Same with the reference to Malt Powel's death in 1829
Please let me know where the records are to to be found...
I found the banns for Anne Powell's marriage to David William at Llywel OK I think they are the ones referenced in Gwenllian's will
Thanks for your help!

Hello All!

Yes I found Mallt Powells burial record on Freereg and based on that data found it on FindMyPast, Her abode was Penvai Trecastle so it must have been her... I am looking for her marriage to John Powell, so far without success.

Any data for Ann(e) Powell born around 1774? Maybe she was the daughter of another son of Gwenllian Powell d 1802. Anne Powell and David Williams Marriage in 1794 (Llywel) was witnessed by Thos. Powell and Thos. Nicholas.... Thos Powell's signature looks a bit like Anne Powell's

Please see attached..

Many Thanks!

Although I used to live in Trecastle, I have no idea where Penfay is.  However, I would point out that Llywel is the parish church which serves Trecastle, and it is about a mile distant from the village itself.  I know the church well - my daughter was baptised there, and my mother is buried there.

I was interested to see that the marriage was witnessed by Thomas Nicholas.  Our house in Trecastle was owned at one time by Thomas Robert Nicholas, who was a skinner and glover and the house is shown as being in Tre-Escob, Trecastle.  Tre-Escob is the part of the village which used to be owned by the Bishop of St David's.  Now, this Thomas Nicholas died in 1794, and his son was also called Thomas Nicholas, so difficult to know which one was the witness.

Checking on my notes regarding the history of Trecastle and Llywel which I researched whilst living there, I can see a James Powell, Gentleman, of Devynnock in 1841.  I'll report back if I find anything which more closely matches what you're looking for.

Hello All!
I must thank everyone here for their help, also all of the other Rootschat members who checked for me!

I have found another reference to the Marriage bond, also the baptism record of Maltt Lloyd. See attached.

There were two children of a Lewis Powell baptised in Is-cloidach about the same time, but I can't find a record for Lewis's marriage to a Gwenllian.. or a convincing baptism. Maybe another Marriage Bond?  The John Powell/ Maltt Lloyd marriage is nowhere to be found.

I have also made a synopsis of Gwenllian Powells will.. just for reference, also attached..

Cheers,
Llanfi
