According to the Birmingham Daily Gazette 14 February 1939, John had retired the previous October, i.e. 1938

Seems to be hard to find in the 1939.

Following up on Girl Guide's finding, there is is note in the Western Morning News 10 October 1938 stating John resigned due to continuing ill-health. Perhaps he did not make it to 1939, or moved to a warmer climate.

Added: The newspaper also states his resignation left Mr. J. H. Thomas  as the sole managing director.  I would have thought it would have been whoever was the "& Son"?
